The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
